The Brecon Beacons National Park stretches from east to west across the southern part of Wales. It’s an absolutely stunning area with beautiful valleys, crystal clear mountain streams and high mountains. Perfect for a day out with the family, and all the more perfect as the main training ground for our special forces….
It is a wild unrelenting tract of land and anyone who has been through either the Royal Marines SAS or SBS selection know it intimately.
It is a land that can make or break human beings and more often than not it breaks them.
The weather here in summer is generally atrocious. The weather in winter is even worse, with nothing blocking the Atlantic storms that come sweeping in from the ocean.
So to add to this the Fan Dance was created.
This challenge starts at the Red phone box next to the Storey Arms hotel In the west and quickly ascends Pen y fan the highest point in The National Park at 886 m. From here you traverse the Ridgecrest before dropping off southwards to a checkpoint and fence your return journey back over the summits to your start point. Do not underestimate this challenge you will need a very good level of fitness and good mountain links to succeed - you have been warned!
